THE POSITIVE SPACE INITIATIVE

The Humber Students' Federation (HSF) and Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (Humber ITAL) are committed to establishing:

• A genuinely inclusive community;

• A campus that is free of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation;

• An environment that is welcoming and inclusive. By establishing the Positive Space Initiative, the HSF and Humber ITAL are making this campus a more inviting and comfortable place for all community members.

The Positive Space poster is a centerpiece, and the most visible part of this initiative. By displaying this poster, we are demonstrating our support for an inclusive and welcoming community. Whether you are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender, Transsexual, Straight, Queer,
Questioning, 2-Spirited, Intersex [LGBT(TSQQ2SI)], putting up a Positive Space poster means that you are contributing to the creation of an environment that welcomes sexual diversity. Essentially, you are
showing that you welcome a safe environment for all.

Why is this issue important?
Intolerance, hate, and shame prevent many LGBT(TSQQ2SI) people from fully participating in society due to fear of discrimination and violence. The LGBT communities are at a higher risk of self-inflicted and social violence. The Positive Space Initiative is intended to heighten awareness in the Humber ITAL community of LGBT issues
and encourage greater acceptance of diversity in its many forms.

Do I assume that places without a Positive Space poster are not supportive of sexual diversity?
You should not assume that. Supporters of sexual diversity do not necessarily participate in the Positive Space Initiative. There are many ways of supporting sexual diversity and creating an inclusive community at Humber ITAL. The Positive Space Initiative is one
visible way of developing an inclusive community on campus, but you can also be active through clubs, committees and your everyday actions.

Will a Positive Space poster in my room or office make people think I'm lesbian, gay or bisexual?
Putting up a Positive Space poster only means that you are contributing to an environment that welcomes diversity. It is an indication of support for a fully-inclusive environment at Humber ITAL.

WHAT CAN I DO?
• Talk about it!
• Challenge anti-LGBT comments
• Speak out against discrimination
• Get involved in the campus club
• Promote tolerance
• Be informed

  Contact the Humber Students' Federation at the Lakeshore office 416.675.6622 ext. 3382 or North Office 416.675.5051 and a Positive Space poster will be forwarded to you.
